The ukulele is originally from Hawaii and is a small guitar-like instrument.
The ukulele is part of the lute family of instruments, which also includes the guitar, banjo and violin. They are generally made from wood, with the traditional koa wood from Hawaii typically preferred, however are often made from plywood, laminate woods and more expensive woods such as mahogany.
The distinct sounds of the ukulele regained popularity with musicians such as Hawaiian Israel Kamakawiwo’ole and his medley of Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World.
